![]() The children’s experiences in this project integrated visual arts science content and the STEAM processes of problem exploration, design, planning, measuring, and recording observations. Over the course of the summer and into the fall, the children cared for their plants measured and recorded the plants’ growth and shared their crops of herbs, vegetables, and flowers with others in the school. White and two parent volunteers created a raised flower bed on the playground so the children could regularly observe and care for the plants. Once they finalized their planning, they planted seeds and cared for them in the classroom until the plants were mature enough to be planted outdoors. Over the course of several weeks, the children researched plants and worked together to choose what to plant in their garden. White proposed that the class plan, design, plant, and take care of a class garden. White’s year-round class of 4- and 5-year-olds was particularly interested in learning about seeds and plant growth. One method for integrating STEAM in your classroom is through child-centered projects. They also promote similar processes for learning, such as asking questions, making connections with prior knowledge, gathering and analyzing data (including observations), and communicating findings and ideas. For example, you could engage children in recording the weather each day on a chart and creating weekly summaries (three sunny days, two cloudy days) to support their learning of science and math content and also data gathering and analysis processes.įor a long-term, well-integrated STEAM project, you could support children as they learn about what conditions are best for a class pet and then explore locations (a dark corner or a sunny window?), observe conditions (too cold or too hot?), measure spaces (is the table big enough for a cage, an observation space, and a caretaker schedule?), and draw plans to create the pet’s new classroom home.Īs you dive into integrated activities, you’ll see that the STEAM fields provide complementary perspectives on the world. ![]() STEAM integration helps teachers focus on content ( what to learn) and processes ( how to learn). In early childhood, we encourage STEAM teaching to integrate these subject areas within a meaningful context. Inquiry practices provide young children with opportunities to approach problems in new and authentic ways. You can facilitate inquiry experiences by creating opportunities for children to learn about the world through STEAM lenses and by asking high-quality, open-ended questions. ![]() Inquiry instruction encourages active (often hands-on) experiences that support building understanding and vocabulary, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and reflection. STEAM for young children falls under the umbrella of inquiry instruction. (STEAM refers to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.) In the rest of the series-which will be published in future issues of TYC-we take a deeper look at each of these examples, focusing on extending children’s STEAM learning through conversations, open-ended questions, and informal assessments. Here, we introduce three examples of STEAM instruction in early childhood settings. This is the first article in a four-part series. Additionally, there are fantastic new characters to build upon the work of the previous film. Old characters, like Anna Kendrick’s Beca and the cult favorite “Fat Amy” by Rebel Wilson, are portrayed to perfection. The cast remains diverse, which is refreshing on some level, and the writing and the humor is, for the most part, impeccable. I fully sympathize with the worries that Beca had about life outside of the Bellas, the fear that Chloe had about leaving college to the point where she “intentionally failed Russian Lit 3 times so that could stay a Bella.” Sure, I don’t plan on failing out and delaying my graduation-but I completely understand the fear that drives that action. I’m graduating on May 16, the day after the movie’s nationwide release, and the fears expressed by Beca are the same things that have been running and screaming around my head for the past year. When I sat down in the Paramount Theater on Thursday evening, I couldn’t have imagined how timely this message was. But at the end of the day, this movie is about graduating college and entering into adulthood. Yes, there’s the music and the impeccable mashups (like the intro mashup between “Timber/Wrecking Ball/The National Anthem”), there’s the romance and the drama. ![]() So that’s really what this movie is about. The spirit of the movies represents the spirit of the millennial, just trying to figure him or herself out while navigating the mess that is young adulthood. I think that’s why these movies have been so popular with our generation-we’re young, we’re restless, we’re stumbling across the world trying to figure out what we want, while also trying to make sense of this crazy, beautiful universe around us. In “Pitch Perfect 2,” Beca and the Bellas have to find their voice as they move on into the real world. In the first movie, Beca had to find her voice in unwanted and unfamiliar college territory. Both movies have been about Beca, and the other Bellas, finding their voice amidst the unknown, something 20-somethings are very familiar with. However, while the Bellas begin to prepare for the biggest competition of their lives, Beca (Anna Kendrick), is focused more on life after college and her future career as a music producer.ĭespite having female heavy casts, both “Pitch Perfect” movies have never solely been about the girls’ romantic relationships with other men, or about catfights or gossip, which is what makes them so appealing to me. Despite this suspension, the Bellas, as three-time national championships, have the opportunity to compete at the World A Capella Championship-if they win, they will be reinstated as an a capella group. So, with a decade of mouth sounds to spur us on (that's what it is and you know it don't get mad at me), here's what you need to know about the upcoming series.“Pitch Perfect 2” begins with the Bellas humiliating themselves at a performance in front of President Obama and the First Lady, leading to their suspension as an a capella group. ![]() ![]() Talks of a fourth film persisted for several years (spurred on in part by a 2018 Instagram post from series star Rebel Wilson in which she and several co-stars were pictured holding up four fingers) before Peacock announced a spin-off series starring fan-favorite character Bumper (Adam Devine) would premiere in late 2022. The first film - which racked up a $115 million worldwide gross on a $17 million budget - was a surprise success at the time, becoming "one of the top-performing DVD, VOD and pay-cable titles of 2013," per " Variety." This resulted in a 2015 sequel, "Pitch Perfect 2" ($287 million worldwide gross on a $29 million budget), as well as a less-than-stellar-performing threequel, "Pitch Perfect 3," in 2017. We’ll say it again, this time with feeling: The first “Pitch Perfect” movie premiered 10 years ago on Sept. While countless millennials were undoubtedly changed on a molecular level by the ubiquitousness of “ Cups” (more commonly known as “The Cup Song”) when the first “Pitch Perfect” movie premiered in 2012, it might be hard for many of us to believe we’ve had that damn song on the brain for 10 years. ![]() You know, a bit like air traffic control already does with planes?Ģ. In other news, “One Punch Man” is a japanese anime about a superhero with the unique dilemma that he’s too powerful and thus able to kill any opponent with a single punch. The writers of this manga jumped on the bandwagon, and depict a possible scenario for delivering low-value mail like fan letters. If Amazon is going to achieve 30-minute delivery for items of that ilk, it will need a lot of rather large warehouses in many, many places, just to keep stuff within 16 km of everyone. This in itself is not new, though it’s the first time we see Amazon go for this approach. Thus it makes sense to combine the two in a hybrid approach. This comes to no surprise for industry experts due to the fact that powered hover flight using a quad rotor system is 10 times less efficient than a single motor pushing a winged aircraft. This time it’s Amazon’s new hybrid delivery drone prototype, which combines VTOL capabilities of multicopters with the long range of winged airframes. And when he’s not bashing electric vehicles he’s busy announcing things for his new employer. ![]() Jeremy Clarkson is now working for Amazon, creating a new show with his unique brand of humor. ![]() ![]() The marble jumped is removed to the gallery around the side of the board. ![]() But the new study shows that different P450s selectively partner with different electron donors (and electron transport chains) to drive their activities. These electrons act as a power source to fuel the machine," Liu explained.Ĭonventionally, scientists thought that the P450s primarily interact with a general electron donor called cytochrome P450 reductase to produce a variety of aromatic compounds. "To make P450 machines run, they need partner molecules to deliver electrons. Scientists have long known that P450 enzymes do not work alone to determine the structural and biological features of aromatic compounds. ![]() The work could help facilitate long-term carbon storage and the carbon-neutral utilization of plant biomass for energy applications, improve plants' nutritional properties, or increase their resistance to disease and harsh environmental conditions. Uncovering the complexity of how these enzymes are regulated provides a new set of genetic tools scientists can use to precisely control which compounds get produced in different parts of a plant. "These enzymes operate as a synthetic machine to produce a wide range of aromatic compounds in plants-including compounds that build plants' waterproof skeleton and vasculature, and others that provide defense from insect invasions and ultraviolet (UV) radiation." "Our study reveals the long-overlooked complexity and versatility of a key set of enzymes known as cytochrome P450 monooxygenases," said study lead author Chang-Jun Liu of Brookhaven Lab's biology department. The research, just published in the journal Science Advances, suggests new strategies for controlling plant biochemistry for agricultural and industrial applications. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have discovered a new level of regulation in the biochemical "machinery" that plants use to convert organic carbon derived from photosynthesis into a range of ring-shaped aromatic molecules. (In both images the red signal comes from chlorophyl.). In this case the scientists attached half of the GFP tag to each of these proteins the fluorescent glow occurs only when the two halves come together as the proteins interact. Right: A GFP-labeled complex of the P450 enzyme interacting with the electron donor. Left: Localization of a GFP-labeled electron donor protein along the endoplasmic reticulum (inner network of membranes) in leaf cells. Given the distinctive bacterial species and strain composition found in each individual's gut, our findings suggest the IgA antibody repertoire is shaped uniquely to bind "self" gut bacteria. In addition to performing genetic and biochemical studies, the scientists used a green fluorescent protein (GFP) "tag" and microscope facilities at Brookhaven Lab's Center for Functional Nanomaterials to visualize the proteins they were studying in leaf cells. Species-specific IgAs had a range of strain specificities. Orally administered hybridoma-produced IgAs still retained bacterial antigen binding capability, implying the potential for a new class of therapeutic antibodies. IgA hybridomas generated from lamina propria B cells of gnotobiotic mice showed that most IgA clones recognized a single bacterial species, whereas a small portion displayed cross-reactivity. By colonizing germ-free mice with defined commensal bacteria, we found that the binding specificity of bulk fecal and serum IgA toward resident gut bacteria resolves well at the species level and has modest strain-level specificity. Despite being the most abundantly secreted immunoglobulin isotype, the pattern of reactivity of immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies toward each individual's own gut commensal bacteria still remains elusive. In all of the years stated above, an additional 4¢ per kilometre is allowed for drivers in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Cardata implements FAVR programs in the US to rectify those inequities, while also saving companies money. A truly equitable system involves accounting for the assorted fixed and variable costs of all drivers. Yet if their colleague drove 40,000 miles in rural Wisconsin in 2021, they would be reimbursed $22,400-enough to buy themselves a brand-new car.įor companies with drivers in diverse locales, the CPM model is unfair. That number is not enough to cover even one of many common car repairs. Low mileage drivers, by contrast, are discouraged from driving at all, since their reimbursements do not cover their fixed and variable automobile expenses.įor example, if a driver drove 5000 miles in LA for work in 2021, they would be reimbursed only $2,800. This encourages employees to “drive for dollars”-to intentionally cover large distances on the highway for extra reimbursements. High-mileage drivers tend to be overcompensated for their travel, whereas low mileage drivers tend to be under-compensated. Since no two vehicles cost exactly the same to own and operate, reimbursing equal sums to every driver leads to inequity. It is suboptimal for companies who require employees to drive daily for business. For this reason, employers often transition to fixed and variable rate (“FAVR”) programs.ĬPM is chiefly useful for reimbursing employees that drive occasionally. ![]() ![]() Fuel prices change far more regularly than do the suggested rates, and different vehicles in different cities cost various amounts to insure. In practice, cents per mile programs do not perfectly reflect these fluctuating costs. Insurance, depreciation, fuel, maintenance, tires-these expenses are all meant to be captured by the suggested CPM rates. Disadvantages of CPMĬents per mile is not the only option for a business vehicle program.ĬPM is meant to reimburse drivers for a variety of costs associated with purchasing and operating a vehicle. This is done because organizations do not want reimbursements to become covert income payments. Any amount paid beyond that figure is assessed for both payroll and income tax. The rates suggested by the IRS and the CRA are the maximum values that can be repaid to employees before the reimbursement is assessed for tax. Below you can see a history of each organization’s recommended rates. In Canada, the CRA rate for 2021 is 59 cents per kilometre (for the first 5000 kilometres-53¢ per mile after that). In 2021, the IRS standard rate for reimbursements is 56 cents per mile. Then they reimburse drivers according to the standard rate set by the relevant tax authority. They must accurately log the miles driven by every employee, including the purpose of the trip and destinations. To institute a CPM program, employers need to empower their employees to use their own vehicle for work. For those reasons, employers opt for CPM. The former is expensive and administratively burdensome the latter is subject to income and payroll taxation. Some enterprises operate on fleets of company-owned or leased vehicles others pay flat rate car allowances to employees to supply and drive their own car. Is cents per mile a good reimbursement program? The IRS and CRA both set optional standard mileage rates in cents for employee vehicle reimbursements. ![]() ![]() Using the Cents per Mile (“CPM”) rate, companies reimburse their employees who use their personal vehicle to drive for business purposes.
